The US has accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government of creating a crematorium intended for burning the bodies of its prisoners. According to the allegations, thousands have already been hanged and burned to cover up tracks in the Sednaya military prison near Damascus.

Today (Monday), the US State Department has published pictures that until recently have been classified as secret, showing structures that have been adapted to operate as a crematorium. “We now believe that the Syrian regime has installed a crematorium in the Sednaya prison complex which could dispose of detainees’ remains with little evidence,” stated Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Stuart Jones. “We believe that the building of a crematorium is an effort to cover up the extent of mass murders taking place in Saydnaya prison.”

According to the State Department, approximately 50 prisoners are executed every week. Over 10,000 prisoners have been imprisoned in the prison over the six-year period of the war.
