Trump defends condolence call to army widow: 'I spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!'

US President Donald Trump found himself in a dispute with a military widow whose husband had fallen in Niger earlier this month. After Myeshia Johnson said in an interview that the president could not remember the name of her dead husband during his condolence call, Trump tweeted, "I spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!" Johnson also confirmed that the president had said that her husband "knew what he signed up for."

"I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!" the President of the United States tweeted on Monday, after Johnson's widow accused him of forgetting her husband's name during Trump's condolence call.

Sgt. La David Johnson was one of the four soldiers killed during a military operation in Niger earlier this month. In an interview on ABC's Good Morning America, Johnson's widow claimed that the president "stumbled" on her husband's name and that "it made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice."

"If my husband is out here, fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country, why can't you remember his name?" said Johnson. She also said that the president had told her that her husband "knew what he signed up for" when he joined the army but that "it hurts anyway."

Johnson added that what she wants most is to get more details about the circumstances of her husband's death. "The questions that I have that I need answered is I want to know why it took them 48 hours to fins my husband," she said. Trump himself has already been criticized for not speaking with the families of the soldiers who were killed immediately after the incident, rather waiting two weeks to make the calls- and only after he was repeatedly questioned by reporters.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, a friend of the Johnson family who was present for the conversation, was the first to expose the president's insensitive statement and the two have been sparring ever since.
