Emergency declared: Hundreds evacuated after tunnel collapse at nuclear plant site

Hundreds of employees were asked to secure ventilation and shelters indoors in Washington after a tunnel collapsed at a nuclear facility, in which there were fears of a plutonium spill. An emergency was declared at the site.

An emergency was declared today (Tuesday) at the PUREX plant, located on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southeastern Washington, as the result of fears of a plutonium spill after a tunnel collapsed on the site. As a result of the accident at the facility, hundreds of employees were asked to secure ventilation and indoor shelters.

According to reports coming from the US, the tunnel collapsed on nuclear waste trains used to transport radioactive materials. The accident most likely resulted from road maintenance at the facility.
