The US Treasury Department announced on Friday that it has imposed sanctions on six people and seven entities affiliated with Hezbollah. The move aims to crack down on the terror group’s finances and diminish Iran’s influence in the region.

“Hezbollah is a terrorist organization responsible for the death of hundreds of Americans. It is also Iran’s primary proxy used to undermine legitimate Arab governments across the Middle East,” said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a statement. “The administration is determined to expose and disrupt Hezbollah’s networks, including those across the Middle East and West Africa, used to fund their illicit operations.”

According to the statement, the sanctioned individuals included five Lebanese and one Iraqi. The entities include companies based in Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Liberia.

Senior White House officials briefing reporters on condition of anonymity said Iran provides Hezbollah with about $700 million annually. According to the officials, the sanctions are Washington’s attempt to target those finances and limit Iranian presence in the region.
