During the night (Friday), the National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that Hurricane Harvey is making its way to Texas and Louisiana. The hurricane is currently approximately 400 kilometers (249 miles) from the US and is expected to reach it within the next day.

According to estimates, Harvey will be the strongest hurricane to hit the US since Wilma in 2005 and will reach category 3 with wind speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. Heavy floods and destruction are expected.

Dozens of towns and cities next to the Gulf of Mexico announced a general evacuation ahead of the storm. A large number of shopping centers in Texas reported that the public drained the shelves ahead of the long hours planned in shelters.

The US is also preparing for a large blow to the oil industry as Hurricane Harvey is expected to hit the area where about a third of the country’s oil is refined. “Texans believe in taking action and always being prepared in the event of an emergency,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott. “That is why I am taking every precaution prior to Tropical Depression Harvey making landfall. Preemptively declaring a state of disaster will allow Texas to quickly deploy resources for the emergency response effort in anticipation of the storm's hazardous conditions.”
