Haley: Russia’s continued support for Assad to be met with new sanctionsWashington will impose additional sanctions on Russia due to its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said on Sunday. Haley added that the sanctions will send a strong message to Russia.
The United States will announce new sanctions against Russia in response to the alleged chemical attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. According to US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, the sanctions targeting Russian companies that manufacture equipment associated with the development of chemical weapons will come as early as Monday.
On Sunday, Haley told Fox News that the US will be sending a strong message to Russia regarding its support for the Syrian regime. “We’re letting Russia know this is not something that we want to be a part of,” she explained. “It’s not something we're going to tolerate and they’ve got to make a decision. Right now, they don’t have very good friends, and right now, the friends that they do have are causing them harm.”
On Saturday, the Security Council rejected a resolution proposed by Russia condemning the recent Western military operation in Syria. At the emergency meeting that was called following the strikes, Haley defended the operation and deemed it a success. She also stressed that the US will act again if necessary, saying that Washington remains “locked and loaded.”
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about the situation in Syria. According to reports, the two leaders agreed that another Western attack on the Arab nation would lead to “chaos” in the international system and make it harder to resolve the crisis through diplomatic methods.
