James Hodgkinson, suspect in Virginia congressman shooting, dies of injuries

Police have identified the suspected shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, whom The Washington Post said had been a supporter of Bernie Sanders.

The man suspected of shooting a Republican congressman Wednesday morning in Virginia has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois. US President Donald Trump said in a White House address that the shooter has died. 

According to The Washington Post, Hodgkinson was a supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and had volunteered in his Iowa caucuses campaign.

Hodgkinson allegedly opened fire during a GOP baseball practice for a charity game, injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

"The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely," Trump said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy."
