Watch: Harvey Weinstein effigy burned in UK celebrationsYesterday, during the annual celebrations of Guy Fawkes Night, a giant effigy of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was burned as British citizens protested the sex offender.
Yesterday (Saturday), thousands of British citizens left their homes to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night, during which bonfires and fireworks are lighted and an effigy of a hated figure is burned.
This year, much-protested Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was the center of attention. The crowd lit a doll of the producer who was accused of sexual harassment by more than 50 women.
“We’ve chosen Harvey Weinstein because he’s the one who has been the most prominent in the papers,” stated one of the event’s organizers. “We feel that he really deserves his comeuppance tonight.” In the past years, effigies included figures such as US President Donald Trump and former FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated annually in England, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Guy Fawkes was among the group who attempted to murder King James I by placing explosives beneath the House of Lords in 1605. Each year, an effigy of Fawkes is set on fire along with the more relevant figures of today.
