Today (Friday), US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met for the first time face-to-face since Trump took office in the White House. The two shook hands and spoke briefly during the opening of the G20 Summit, and appeared very happy and friendly with each other. Later in the day the two leaders are expected to hold a formal and closed meeting.
As previously reported by JOL, Trump said at a press conference during his visit to Warsaw that he is not completely convinced that Russia tried to interfere in the American elections. “I think it was Russia, and it could have been other people in other countries. I see nothing wrong with that statement,” Trump stated. “No one really knows. No one really knows for sure.”

When Trump was asked about the fact that the US intelligence community had already made it clear that Russia had intervened in the elections, Trump compared this assessment to the claim that sparked the US’ War on Iraq regarding weapons of mass destruction.
“I remember when I was sitting back listening about Iraq, weapons of mass destruction, how everybody was 100% certain that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction,” Trump continued. “Guess what? That led to one big mess. They were wrong and it led to a mess.”
Trump also criticized Russia for its hand in events throughout in the world: “We urge Russia to cease its destabilizing activities in Ukraine and elsewhere, and its support for hostile regimes -- including Syria and Iran -- and to instead join the community of responsible nations in our fight against common enemies and in defense of civilization itself.”
