Watch: Following Mugabe’s resignation, Zimbabwe looks forward to bright futureFollowing the resignation of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, celebrations in capital continued until the middle of the night: “I am so happy we are liberated…I believe this is the new beginning.”
Yesterday (Tuesday), Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe resigned after almost 40 years in power. Over the years, 93-year-old Mugabe became a tyrant who brought the country to economic and social collapse.
According to local reporter John Kassim, things are practically back to usual. Zimbabwe’s citizens celebrated until the late hours of the night and expressed hope for the future. According to Kassim, however, people wanted to know why it took so long for Mugabe to resign.
“I was born in 1980,” stated a Zimbabwean citizen. “Mugabe was in power up to today. Three generations Mugabe has been in power, everyone has been suffering because of Mugabe and nothing is moving and nothing has been done. Today marks the new independence. On behalf of Zimbabwe, I am so happy we are liberated. I am so happy for our children, for our generation. I believe this is the new beginning.”
Despite the change, Zimbabwe still has a long way to go. According to reports, the country has a 90 percent unemployment rate. The person that will now lead the country is former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who will be sworn in as president on Friday.
