Today (Tuesday), ousted Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe officially resigned after almost 40 years in power. Mugabe handed in his letter of resignation shortly after the local parliament began the impeachment process.

According to the letter, the decision to resign was voluntary. The government’s speaker was forced to stop reading the letter due to the overwhelming celebratory outburst in the parliament. A celebration broke out in the streets as people danced and drivers honked.

As reported by JOL on Sunday, the 93-year-old leader was given less than 24 hours to resign or else face impeachment by the ruling political party ZANU-PF following a military coup in the country last week. According to a local reporter, approximately 1.5 million citizens marched the streets in celebration without any violent incidents.
