Israel’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau issued a serious travel warning urging Israelis not to travel to the Philippine island of Mindanao due to the terrorist groups that are operating on the island. “There is a real and tangible threat to Israelis in the area,” the travel warning reads.
The bureau stressed that in light of the seriousness of the threat, it is recommended that Israelis avoid visiting the area and any Israelis who are currently there should leave immediately. Due to the possibility that the terrorist operations will spread to other parts of the country, the bureau has asked Israelis throughout the Philippines to remain vigilant and comply with the local security forces’ orders.
Last month, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared a state of emergency and martial law on the island of Mindanao, where the city of Marawi is located. Duterte warned that he will have no mercy on the terrorists who are trying to take over the island. “The military rule will continue for years if necessary,” he said during a press conference.
Over the past few weeks, the streets of the island have been the scenes of bloody battles between local security forces and terrorists belonging to the Maute group, which is linked to ISIS. The terrorists have already gained control of several streets and bridges in Marawi.
