Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has met with Guatemala’s Ambassador to Israel Sara Angelina Solis Castaneda to discuss the operational details of the embassy’s transfer to Jerusalem, scheduled for May 16. Barkat commended Guatemala’s decision in a statement on Wednesday.

“I applaud Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and the Guatemalan government for the brave decision to transfer the embassy to Jerusalem,” Barkat said. “I call on other countries to follow the footsteps of the United States and Guatemala and transfer their embassies to Jerusalem.”

During AIPAC’s annual policy conference in Washington last month, Morales announced the May date of the embassy move. "As a sovereign decision, we recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Morales said. "In May of this year, we will celebrate Israel's 70th anniversary, and under my instructions, two days after the United States moves its embassy, Guatemala will return and permanently move its embassy to Jerusalem."
