Israeli officer in message to Poland at Auschwitz: “You also had a part in this”An IDF reserve service officer blamed the Polish people for their part in the Holocaust during a visit to Auschwitz last week. The officer was disciplined. The IDF said it will continue educating its soldiers about the Holocaust and stressed that the incident does not represent the army’s values.
During a visit to Auschwitz, a reserve officer in the Israeli army held up a sign claiming the Polish people were also responsible for the deaths of Jews in the Holocaust, Army Radio reported on Sunday.
While posing for a photograph, the IDF reserve officer, who was part of an Israeli IDF delegation called “Witnesses in Uniform,” held up the piece of paper with writing in Polish. “You also had a part in this,” the sign read.
The officer was not arrested, but the Israeli army promised that he would be disciplined.
According to the report, the incident happened last Thursday. Auschwitz security witnessed and recorded the incident and reported it to the Auschwitz museum.
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit stressed that the incident violated the Israeli military values and the essence of the delegation and was being treated seriously. The unit also added that IDF is committed to educating about the Holocaust and will continue to educate IDF soldiers and officers about it.
The officer’s behavior was a response to the new Polish law that outlaws blaming Poland for crimes committed during World War II, which took effect last month.
