Today (Friday), Israel praised the UN Security Council’s decision to extend the UNIFIL peacekeeping force’s mandate in Lebanon, where forces will be fortified for more efficiency. “The resolution’s importance lies in the call for UNIFIL to operate purposefully and substantially in order to prevent the strengthening of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon,” the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry wrote in an official statement.
“The resolution expresses the UN Security Council’s recognition that the change is necessary and that tools must be provided in order to completely fulfill the mandate,” the ministry added. “Israel believes that simply the force’s determined action will contribute in maintaining stability, quiet and security on the Israeli-Lebanese border.”
Along with expressing gratitude to US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who advanced the proposal, the ministry also wrote that this is the result of an “inter-agency effort” by the Israeli Prime Minister and the Foreign Affairs Ministry in order to raise awareness and lead to more vigorous action by the UN Security Council and UNIFIL.
