Council of Europe's anti-Israel resolution altered thanks to Israeli diplomacyThe Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on Thursday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution denouncing the latest US moves regarding Jerusalem and the Palestinians, though it also added a last-minute clause rejecting the PA's financial support of terrorists' families.
The Knesset's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has managed to "soften" a Palestinian-led resolution denouncing the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
As a result of diplomatic efforts by Israeli officials, the council has agreed to add a clause calling on the Palestinian Authority to stop providing financial support to prisoners convicted of terror acts and to their families. In addition, five clauses condemning Israel have been removed from the final draft.
The resolution, which was approved by a vast majority, still voiced "regret" over US President Donald Trump's declaration in December that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and is planning to move its embassy there.
"Holding the Palestinians accountable for acts of terror, and calling on them to stop them, is a major diplomatic achievement," said Carmel Shama-Hacohen, Israel's Ambassador to the Council of Europe. "I think the Palestinians now regret initiating this unnecessary move, but this is what happens when you constantly play with fire, incite and recycle lies."
