Former US Secretary of State Kerry: Israel, Egypt secretly urged US to ‘bomb Iran’At a summit in Washington, former US Secretary of State John Kerry stated that many leaders in the Middle East asked the White House to attack Iran before the signing of the 2015 nuclear agreement. Kerry even mentioned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by name, saying that he was “genuinely agitating towards action” against Tehran.
Former US Secretary of State John Kerry revealed during the Ignatius Forum in Washington on Tuesday night that senior Israeli and Egyptian officials, including the heads of state, urged the US to bomb Iran before the signing of the nuclear agreement. The AP reported that Kerry added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “genuinely agitating towards action” against Iran.
Kerry said that many kings and leaders in the Middle East told the US that bombing Iran is “the only thing they are going to understand.” The former top diplomat explained that Washington believed that it was a “trap” because most of the same countries would publicly denounce the US if it used such force against Iran.
Kerry added that he does not know whether Iran plans to resume its nuclear ambitions in another 10 or 15 years, when the sanctions and restrictions in the deal’s sunset clauses have been lifted. He also defended the deal, saying it was the best that the US could achieve.
