As reported earlier today on JOL, the UN General Assembly approved a resolution by an overwhelming majority to reject the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, with 128 member states voting in favor of the resolution and nine voting against. However, Israel is quite satisfied with the fact that 35 nations abstained and many others did not attend the vote, which Israel and the US consider to be an impressive diplomatic achievement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the resolution, calling it a ‘theater of the absurd’: “Jerusalem is our capital. Always was, always will be.” Meanwhile, the Palestinians and other Arab nations applauded the vote, calling it a “victory for Palestine.”

“Israel completely rejects this preposterous resolution,” Netanyahu added in a video that he posted in English to his official Facebook account. “But I do appreciate the fact that a growing number of countries refused to participate in this theater of the absurd. So, I appreciate that and especially I want again to express our thanks to President Trump and Ambassador Haley, for their stalwart defense of Israel and their stalwart defense of the truth.”
