Watch: Netanyahu announces that Israel offered aid to Iran and Iraq
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this evening (Tuesday) that Israel has offered to help Iran and Iraq via the Red Cross in the wake of the major earthquake that rattled the region.
In an address at the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly in Los Angeles, Netanyahu said: "I just saw the pictures of the destruction in Iran and Iraq from this week’s earthquake. And I saw these heartbreaking images of men and women and children buried under the rubble. So I am proud to announce tonight that a few hours ago I directed that we offer the Red Cross medical assistance for the Iraqi and Iranian victims of this disaster."
"I’ve said many times that we have no quarrel with the people of Iran," Netanyahu said. "Our quarrel is only with the tyrannical regime that holds them hostage and threatens our destruction. But our humanity is greater than their hatred. Israel continues to be a light unto the nations and this is what I am proud of. And all of you can be proud of Israel’s morals and Israel’s might."
At least 530 people were killed and 8,000 were injured in the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Sunday along the border between Iran and Iraq. Electricity was cut off in many cities in the region, and residents were encouraged to evacuate to the streets and public parks for fear of collapsing buildings. Because many houses in the remote areas of the two countries are made of mud and flimsy materials, the authorities believe that most of them have collapsed.
