Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Sunday evening with Daniel Knoll, the daughter of the 85-year-old Holocaust survivor who was brutally murdered in Paris last month. During the conversation, Netanyahu offered condolences to the grieving family on behalf of the State of Israel.

“This was a disgusting murder, but it also shows how far we’ve come and how much more we have to go,” Netanyahu told Daniel. “I think that the story of your dear mother, who was taken in such a cruel way, is a reminder to us that our struggles are still ahead of us.”

“We are so sad. It’s impossible to understand. It’s devastating,” Daniel replied. She then surprised Netanyahu by telling him about the special connection their families share. “During Operation Entebbe, I was in Normandy, and we heard about what happened with the French plane,” she said. “Suddenly, my father-in-law said that his mother could be on that plane. Turns out, she was really in Entebbe and rescued by your brother. That’s the story of the Jewish people—unfortunately, bad things are always happening.”

Netanyahu, moved by the story, shared what the operation in which his brother was killed means to him. “This wasn’t always our story. Our story was one in which they murdered us—unfortunately, just like they murdered your mother—and we couldn’t protect ourselves,” he said. “What happened in Entebbe was new—our ability to fight back against the murderers. It’s interesting that the two stories come together in your family.”
