News agencies all over the world cover Peres’ passing: “A loss for all the people of Israel”The passing of former Israeli President Shimon Peres made headlines all over the world. Articles about Peres were featured in several major news agencies including the Washington Post, the Guardian and Der Spiegel.
The announcement from Tel HaShomer Hospital about Shimon Peres’ deteriorating condition yesterday evening quickly spread throughout the world. Thus, the news of Peres’ passing this morning did not go unnoticed by news outlets around the world.
The Washington Post called Peres “an Israeli statesman who helped build his country into a nuclear-armed regional military power. The newspaper also noted that Peres “shared a Nobel Peace Prize for laying out a short-lived framework for peace with the Palestinians and more recently defended Israel’s controversial military actions in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.”
The French newspaper Le Monde eulogized Peres: “A man of culture who loved literature, a man with a vision but at the same time, rough and tough with his opponents as well as his allies. Although Peres was a veteran of the Israeli leaders, he wasn’t always the most popular.”
“The last surviving figure associated with the founding of modern Israel,” wrote the British newspaper the Guardian. “Peres moved from being a hawk to a peacemaker.”
“The man who went from being the son of an Eastern-Polish timber merchant to being the father of Israel’s nuclear program from being,” wrote the German newspaper Der Spiegel. “A loss for all the people of Israel.”
Even Al Jazeera noted Peres’ passing. However, the Arab media outlet chose to attack the former prime minister and president’s actions. “He is best remembered as part of a Labour Zionist elite responsible for the creation of a Jewish state in 1948 on the ruins of the Palestinian homeland,” read one Al Jazeera article about Peres’ death. In addition, Al Jazeera called Peres an “architect of the Israeli aggression."
