Obama orders flags to be lowered to half-staff out of respect for Peres’ passing

The U.S. President ordered that all U.S. flags at federal buildings be lowered to half-staff until tomorrow evening in order to honor the memory of Israel’s 9th President. This is the sixth time in America’s history that the flags have been lowered in honor of a foreign official.

U.S. President Barack Obama ordered last night (Wednesday) that the state flags at all federal buildings be lowered to half-staff in order to mark the passing of Israel’s 9th President Shimon Peres.

The announcement released by the White House read: “As a mark of respect for the memory of Shimon Peres, former President and Prime Minister of Israel, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, on September 30, 2016.”

This is the sixth time in U.S. history that the flags across the country have been lowered out of respect for a foreign official. Last night, Obama confirmed that he will attend Peres’ funeral on Friday in Jerusalem. In addition, Obama is expected to eulogize Peres during the ceremony.
