GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson ‘furious’ over Tillerson’s embassy comments

American news agencies are reporting that GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson was outraged after he heard U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s comments about the embassy move to Jerusalem. According to the reports, Adelson told U.S. President Donald Trump that it is impossible to negotiate with the Palestinians.

On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that U.S. President Donald Trump is still contemplating whether or not he should move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, a comment that seriously upset Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson. According to two sources who are involved in the matter, Adelson was “furious” after hearing Tillerson’s remarks about the peace process and the embassy move.

Adelson reportedly said that the Palestinians are always putting forward demands that Israel cannot meet and therefore he does not buy Tillerson’s explanation that the embassy move would most likely affect the peace efforts. According to the reports, Adelson told Trump that the Palestinians are impossible negotiating partners.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office clarified last night that the prime minister supports the embassy move. “Israel’s stance has been relayed many times to the US government and the world- moving the US embassy to Jerusalem would not harm the peace process, it would do the opposite,” the statement said. “It would advance the peace by righting a historical wrong and by shattering the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel.”
