On Friday, Turkey harshly condemned the recent Israeli announcement about newly approved settlement construction in the West Bank. In a press release, the Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry called on Israel to stop building in the West Bank.
“[The] Israeli government is immediately required to stop this irresponsible attitude violating the fundamental rights of Palestinian people primarily the right to live, bearing the risk of resulting in a conflict in the region, violating the international law and relevant UN resolutions and disregarding any reaction of the international community,” the ministry stated.
On Thursday, the Israeli government approved the construction of more than 1,100 homes in West Bank settlements. The move followed an announcement made earlier this week by Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman regarding the expected approval of 1,285 new housing units by the Supreme Planning Committee for Judea and Samaria, which he heads. He also said that about 2,500 additional housing units in 20 settlements are in their advanced planning stages.
