Ankara is prepared to help the Israelis and the Palestinians reach a peace agreement by mediating between the sides, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu revealed on Saturday. Cavusoglu made the announcement from Paris while he was accompanying Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the European country for an official visit. Turkey’s top diplomat added that a two-state solution is the only way to resolve the conflict.
Cavusoglu also mentioned US President Donald Trump’s announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, stating that he has contacted US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson regarding the matter.
According to Cavusoglu, Turkey’s relations with Israel will continue despite the tensions between the Arab world and Israel following Trump’s declaration. Cavusoglu then stressed that no one can claim that Turkey is anti-Semitic because it treats its Jewish population and the tourists from Israel very well.
In June 2016, Israel and Turkey signed a reconciliation agreement, which ended a long rift triggered by the 2010 Gaza flotilla raid between the countries. As for the relations between the two countries, the agreement states: “Turkey and Israel will be committed to overcoming the differences between them and working together to normalize and improve their relations in order to promote peace and stability in the region.”
