On Monday, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson came out in defense of Israel’s actions against the Iranian threats over the weekend and condemned Tehran’s activities in Syria. “We are concerned at the Iranian actions, which detract from efforts to get a genuine peace process underway,” he stressed.

The United Kingdom’s foreign secretary expressed support on Monday for Israel’s actions in retaliation against Iranian and Syrian aggression over the weekend. In a statement, Boris Johnson, who is currently in Thailand, commented on the recent events in Israel’s northern region and the Jewish state’s counterattacks in Syria.

“The United Kingdom is concerned at developments over Israel’s border with Syria this weekend. We support Israel’s right to defend itself against any incursions into its territory,” Johnson said.

The UK’s top diplomat also slammed Iran’s presence and actions in Syria in the same statement. “We are concerned at the Iranian actions, which detract from efforts to get a genuine peace process underway,” he stressed. “We encourage Russia to use its influence to press the regime and its backers to avoid provocative actions and to support de-escalation in pursuit of a broader political settlement.”

Early Saturday morning, an Iranian drone entered Israel’s airspace and was shot down by an Israeli attack helicopter. In response, Israeli aircraft attacked the drone’s control vehicle, which was positioned at a Syrian airbase near Palmyra. Dozens of surface-to-air missiles were launched at the Israeli fighter jets by Syrian air defense forces and an F-16I fighter jet was hit. The pilots were forced to ejected from the aircraft and parachuted down into Israeli territory.

The Israeli Air Force retaliated by attacking 12 Iranian and Syrian military targets in the Arab country. Senior IAF commander Brig. Gen. Amnon Ein Dar stated that this was “the biggest and most significant attack the air force has carried out against Syrian air defenses since 1982.”
