B’Tselem Executive Director speaks in front of UN Security Council about settlementsThe UN Security Council gathered today in order to discuss the Israeli settlements in the West Bank. B’Tselem and Americans for Peace Now representatives spoke during the special meeting. The Israeli Ambassador to the UN harshly criticized the organizations for attending the meeting.
The UN Security Council convened today (Friday) for a special discussion to which representatives from B’Tselem and Americans for Peace Now were invited. The discussion was titled: “The settlements as the obstacle to peace and a two-state solution.” The special discussion was requested by the Palestinian delegation to the UN.
B’Tselem Executive Director Hagai El-Ad began his speech by presenting video clips that showed IDF soldiers making fun of Palestinians in Hebron and Israeli security forces destroying the homes of terrorists. “For the past 49 years and counting, the injustice known as the occupation of Palestine and Israeli control of Palestinian lives in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem has become part of the international order,” El-Ad said. “I implore you today to take action. Anything short of decisive international action will achieve nothing but ushering in the second half of the first century of the occupation.”
“The UN Security Council has more than just power: you have a moral responsibility and a real opportunity to act with a sense of urgency before we reach the symbolic date of June 2017 and the second half of that first century begins,” continued El-Ad. “Israel cannot have it both ways. You cannot occupy a people for fifty years and call yourself a democracy. You cannot violate the rights of millions and claim international perks justified by hollow words about commitment to shared human rights values.”
Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon harshly attacked the Israeli organizations that participated in the discussion and said that it is a shame that they joined the diplomatic terrorism that the Palestinians are trying to carry out via the UN. “Two days after the anti-Israel members of the UN passed a resolution aimed at cutting off the Jewish people’s historical ties to Jerusalem, the Israeli organizations chose to slander and spread lies against us during a discussion that was organized and arranged by the Palestinian delegation,” Danon stated.
The Israeli Peace Now group did not send representatives to the discussion. However, Americans for Peace Now representatives attended the discussion.
