Today’s (Friday) decision by UNESCO to recognize the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron as a Palestinian World Heritage Site has sparked outrage throughout Israel’s political system.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the decision "delusional," saying that "this time UNESCO has determined that the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron is a Palestinian site, somehow not Jewish, and that the site is in danger. Not a Jewish site?! Who is buried there - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Sarah, Rebecca and Leah. Our forefathers and mothers! And the site is in danger? Only in places Israel is present in, like Hebron, are religious freedoms for all, promised.”

"In the Middle East, mosques, churches, synagogues everywhere else are being bombed - in places where Israel isn’t present," the prime minister continued. "So, we will continue to preserve the Cave of the Patriarchs, freedom of religion for all, and we will also continue to preserve the truth."

The prime minister also announced that he would cut an additional $1 million from the funds Israel pays for its UN membership, and will instead allocate them to the establishment of a “Jewish Heritage Museum in Kiryat Arba and Hebron,” along with other projects in the field.

Israel’s president Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin also harshly criticized the decision, stating: "The decision by UNESCO proves once again that this is a body determined to continue spreading anti-Jewish lies while remaining silent as the region’s heritage is being erased by brutal extremists.”

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman called the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) "anti-Semitic, politically biased and an embarrasement." He said that the decisions of this "irrelevant" organization will not harm the country's right and expressed hope that the United States will stop funding UNESCO.
