After the White House officially renounced the US delegation official’s comment that the Western Wall is part of the West Bank, CNN reported today (Tuesday) that senior-level US State Department and intelligence community officials are urging the White House not to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city. According to these officials, recognition of the Israeli capital city could harm the peace process and trigger other regional issues.
The officials’ warning comes following US President Donald Trump’s uncertainty about changing US policy regarding Jerusalem and moving the US Embassy to the city. They also correspond with advice provided to Trump by the Gulf States and by other officials within the Arab world.
Despite the warnings, several of the president’s senior-level advisors recommended that he stand by his promise to recognize Jerusalem as the State of Israel’s capital and to declare moving the US Embassy to the city upon his visit to Israel next week.
