Iranian militias could be established 3 miles from IsraelRussia and the US rejected Israel’s request to prevent Iranian militias to settle closer than 60 kilometers from Israel’s border and agreed that the militias could be as close as 5 kilometers away.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump rejected Israel’s request to forbid Iranian militias to settle closer than 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Israel’s border and instead agreed that the militias could be as close as 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from Israel.
Israel’s request to distance itself from Iran’s far-reaching arm was entered during Syrian ceasefire talks, approximately 4 months ago. Iran’s effort to strengthen its influence in the Middle East continues, especially in Syria and Lebanon.
Several weeks ago, London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported that the US has agreed to Russia's proposal to situate Iranian militias within a distance of only 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the border with Israel.
The US delegation also agreed to deploy a Russian force to supervise the ceasefire zone in southern Syria. Israeli officials estimate that the Russian presence in the region will make it difficult for Israel to attack targets in Syria.
