Americans’ favorable views of Israel highest in years, says new studyAccording to a the results of a survey published on Tuesday, 74% of Americans view Israel favorably and 64% support Israel over the Palestinian Authority in the Middle Eastern conflict. In addition, the percentage of Americans sympathizing with neither side, both sides or hold a neutral opinion is at an all-time low.
Pro-Israel views among the American public is are at an all time high, according to a new survey published on Tuesday. The Gallup study, titled “Americans remain staunchly in Israel’s corner” has revealed that 74% of Americans view Israel in a favorable light.
Some 1000 US citizens were polled on their stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as part of the study by the Gallup company, which has been collecting data on the topic since 1988. The survey found that just 19% of Americans today sympathize more with the Palestinians than with the Israelis. Meanwhile, the number of Americans who said they sympathize with neither or both sides is at its lowest to date, at 16%.
Both Republicans and Democrats expressed support of Israel, according to Gallup, although Republicans mostly account for the recorded increase. According to the survey, the percentage of Republicans supporting Israel has increased from 59% in 2001 to a 87% in 2018. Democrats’ support of Israel rose from 42% in 2001 to 49% this year.
Israel's favorable score is the highest it has been since 1991, when its rating spiked to 79% during the Gulf War. Support of the Palestinian Authority, while significantly at lower rates than Israel, has also slightly increased to above 20% in the past two years, after six years of lower figures.
The differences in opinion also varied by age, as Gallup found that Israel receives higher favorable views from people aged 55 and older (80% favorable) than from those aged 35 to 54 (72%) or 18 to 34 (65%). In addition, the PA received better ratings from adults 18 to 34 (31% favorable) than from those 35 to 54 (15%) or 55 and older (18%).
