FIFA Congress decides against bringing anti-Israel proposal to voteThe FIFA Congress rejected the anti-Israel proposal submitted by Palestinian Football Association head Jibril Rajoub. Only 27% voted in favor of bringing the proposal to a vote.
The FIFA Congress decided against bringing Palestinian Football Association head Jibril Rajoub’s anti-Israel proposal to a vote. 73% voted against bringing the proposal to a vote while only 27% supported it. “I’m here to stop the suffering of my soccer players,” Rajoub said minutes before the vote.
Rajoub attempted to add to the FIFA Congress’ agenda a draft resolution banning six Israeli soccer teams from the West Bank from playing in league tournaments. Israel suspected that this resolution would be used as grounds to remove Israel from the league.
“Intense, smart and productive work that was carried out over long months and peaked in the last few days has paid off and the Palestinian attempt to embarrass Israel and take actual steps against it was unsuccessful,” said Israeli Football Association President Ofer Eini. “We have good and loyal friends in FIFA.”
