Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is preparing for the arrival of dozens of world leaders who will be coming to Israel in order to attend Shimon Peres’ funeral on Friday. The ministry opened a special office in order to assemble all the information about the world leaders’ plans and make sure that their needs are met throughout their stay in Israel.
Among the senior level figures who plan to attend the service are U.S. President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President François Hollande. In addition, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton are expected to attend the funeral.
“A light has gone out but the hope he gave us will burn forever,” stated Obama this morning (Wednesday). “There are few people who we share this world with who change the course of human history not just through their role in human events but because they expand our moral imagination and force us to expect more of ourselves. My friend Shimon was one of those people.”
“Israel has lost a leader who championed its security, prosperity and limitless possibilities from its birth to his last day on earth,” eulogized Bill and Hillary Clinton. The Middle East has lost a fervent advocate for peace and reconciliation.” The couple also called Peres “a true and treasured friend.”
Prince Charles is also expected to arrive in Israel for the funeral as well as British Prime Minister Theresa May. In addition, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said that German President Joachim Gauck, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and many others are expected to attend the ceremony.
Former U.S. President George W. Bush sent his condolences to Peres’ family: “Laura and I join the people of Israel and those around the world in mourning the death of Shimon Peres. As a young man, he worked for his country's independence. For the rest of his life, he led it with a deep and abiding concern for his people and a commitment to freedom and peace. The Bush family will miss Shimon Peres and his grace, dignity and optimism.”
