Complaint filed against German soldiers who performed Nazi saluteHundreds of German soldiers are suspected of being associated with radical right-wing politics and severe racist manifestations which glorify Nazi tyrant Adolf Hitler that includes the performance of the Nazi salute while shouting “Heil Hitler.” In the letter filed to the Parliament, the German Defense Ministry complained about the eased treatment of these incidents.
According to a letter sent by the German Defense Ministry to the country’s parliament, the German army’s Counter-Terrorism Agency is investigating 275 of its soldiers suspected for their association with radical right-wing politics including a soldier who was heard shouting “Heil Hitler.” The letter stated that over the past two years, 200 incidents have been reported in which soldiers performed the Nazi salute or uttered racist expressions to immigrant soldiers.
In the letter, the Defense Ministry criticized the poor and weak treatment towards these racist gestures which have been exhibited within army ranks and noted several of the reported events. In one of the incidents, for example, a soldier was heard voicing racist proclamations that glorified the Nazi leader: “Heil, Hitler” and “Sieg Heil.”
“The case was passed on to the military prosecutor and the Civil Prosecutor’s office but the soldier was not dismissed or suspended,” noted the letter. Public demonstrations of salutes and insignia related to the Nazi party are illegal in Germany and sometimes carry heavy penalties.
