The skies of Manhattan were filled with black smoke as the Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagadol synagogue in the Lower East Side of Manhattan caught on fire at around 7:00 pm local time on Sunday.

The 1850 building served as the house of worship for the Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, an Orthodox Jewish congregation, before it was shut down in 2007.

The cause of the blaze is now under investigation. Witnesses claimed that there was another fire at the location last week, although no official statements from the City of New York have confirmed this.
