Ohio: Man indicted for beating up man he believed was JewishA 32-year-old man from Ohio has been charged with committing a hate crime after he beat up a man whom he thought was Jewish.
An Ohio man has been charged with a hate crime for beating up a man he believed was Jewish.
In February, 32-year-old Izmir Koch stepped outside of a restaurant near Cincinnati and yelled asking if anyone was Jewish. When a man answered that he was, Koch punched him in the head and proceeded to kick him while he was on the ground. The victim suffered injuries to his ribs and eye.
Prosecutor Benjamin Glassman said the victim was not Jewish, but added that the attack is still considered a hate crime. "Physically attacking someone because you think he's Jewish — or Christian or Muslim or any other religion — is a federal crime," he said.
