A memorial ceremony was held on Wednesday in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the UN General Assembly in New York. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon and ambassadors from around the world participated in the ceremony along with senior-level officials within the international organization.
Guterres spoke at the ceremony noting the rise in anti-Semitic incidents and warning of the rise of radical right-wing factions throughout the world. “The gargantuan horror of those 12 years, from 1933 to 1945, reverberates to this day,’ Guterres stated. “This annual day of commemoration is about the past, but also the future; it is about Jews, but also all others who find themselves scapegoated and vilified solely because of who they are.”
“Since hatred and contempt of human lives are rampant in our time, we must stand guard against xenophobia every day and everywhere,” Guterres said. “Across the world, the state of hate is high.”
