UNESCO Director-General clarifies: “Western Wall is the holiest place in Judaism”The UNESCO Director-General clarified the organization’s resolution regarding the holy sites in Jerusalem: “The Al Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram al-Sharif, the sacred shrine of Muslims, is also the Har HaBayit – or Temple Mount – whose Western Wall is the holiest place in Judaism.”
Less than a day after the Executive Committee of UNESCO passed a resolution that questions the Jewish people's connection to the Temple Mount and Western Wall, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova clarified her position regarding the matter. Bokova released today (Friday) an official statement on the organization’s website. In the statement, Bokova wrote that the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Temple Mount are holy sites for Muslims while the nearby Western Wall is “the holiest place in Judaism.”
“The heritage of Jerusalem is indivisible and each of its communities has a right to the explicit recognition of their history and relationship with the city,” she continued. “To deny, conceal or erase any of the Jewish, Christian or Muslim traditions undermines the integrity of the site and runs counter to the reasons that justified its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list.”
Yesterday, JOL reported that the Executive Committee of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, passed an anti-Zionist resolution that was submitted by Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, sparking fierce criticism throughout the Jewish world.
Earlier today, JOL reported that Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett announced that Israel will immediately suspend its cooperation with UNESCO in light of the resolution.
