10-year-old Ilai Nir was pronounced dead at Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center this afternoon (Sunday). On Friday, Ilai and his father, Dr. Omri Nir, fell off a cliff in southern Israel. Nir, an expert on Hezbollah and Lebanese politics and history who taught at several universities and colleges in Israel, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ilai was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

According to witnesses, Ilai slipped as he was climbing up a ladder attached to a cliff. Nir saw his son slip and heroically lunged to grab him but the two fell off the cliff together. During the fall, Nir completely covered his son, sustaining most of the fall in hope of saving his son.

Earlier today, JOL reported that one of the first responders at the scene said that Nir protected his son in the most remarkable way possible.

Nir and Ilai will be buried together tomorrow afternoon. The Nir family decided to donate Ilai’s organs.
