Twelve Israeli tourists have been taken into custody in Cyprus as part of an investigation into the alleged gang rape of a young British woman in the seaside town of Ayia Napa, located in the south-east of the Mediterranean island.

The 19-year-old British tourist told the local police she was in a hotel room with a young Israeli, when suddenly 11 others suddenly entered the room and began to rape her, despite her pleas to stop.

When the suspects arrived at the Paralimni Court for a custody hearing., they concealed their faces. The custody hearing was closed to the public because one of them is a minor. Some of their relatives were present. The judge has granted the police’s request for the suspects to remain in police custody for eight days. During which time the investigators will finalize their investigation.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry released a statement, “The Israeli consul in Nicosia, Yossi Wurmbrand, is monitoring developments and is in contact with the detainees. Their families have been kept informed”.

The city of Ayia Napa, known for its nightlife and fine sandy beaches, welcomes many young tourists. With 1.32 million visitors in 2018 to which many of them are British, Russians and Israelis.

The 19-year-old is currently undergoing a medical examination to confirm the rape allegations.
