The Brazilian government’s plan to cut back on school funding has aggravated thousands of children including 16-year-old Ana Júlia Ribeiro, who became a social media sensation after the speech she delivered in from of legislators in her home state of Parana went viral.

Students in hundreds of Brazilian schools are protesting against the government’s plan to suspend the education budget. The protest began in Parana but quickly spread to other parts of the country. Ribeiro received widespread support when she defended student rights and criticized the government in front of legislators.

Ribeiro is being compared to Pakistani Malala Yousafzai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize a few years ago.
