18 people were injured when the escalator at a Hong Kong shopping center changed direction: rather than moving up, the escalator began to move downward two times its normal speed. The shopping center management explained that the escalator had undergone a security check two days prior to the incident and that it was most likely caused by a technical error.
The escalator incident in Hong Kong
An unusual event occurred this week at a Hong Kong shopping center when an escalator suddenly changed its direction with dozens of people standing on it. 18 people were injured during the incident, which was recorded by the security cameras.
In the video, the escalator is seen moving normally when it suddenly and quickly changes its direction. The people standing on the escalator did not have time to understand what happened and they fell on top of one another.
“We saw people losing their balance and rolling backwards,” witnesses said. “Some held on to the railing while others tried to run the opposite way or climb over the railing to the other escalator.”

A representative from the shopping center stated to local media that the escalator had undergone a security check two days prior to the incident and that initial findings reveal that this was most likely a technical error of the escalator’s chain.
