Malaysian customs employees were surprised to find 330 live tortoises in a package labeled as “rocks.”
Customs agents at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport are used to checking hundreds of thousands of packages that arrive every day, but this time, they were surprised when they opened a black suitcase. The package aroused the employees’ suspicion and when they opened it, they were surprised to find 330 tortoises belonging to endangered species. The tortoises arrived on an Etihad Airways flight.
A customs employee suspected that something was not quite right with this package that was labeled as containing rocks and requested assistance from his shift manager, who carefully opened the package and discovered that 325 Indian star tortoises and five Ploughshare tortoises were packed inside.
These 330 tortoises are said to be worth about $277,000, according to the Malaysian customs office.
