At least five gravestones at a Jewish cemetery in Rochester, New York, were vandalized. According to the local authorities, it has not been determined yet whether this was a hate crime. In the past two weeks, two Jewish cemeteries were vandalized. The local authorities that dealt with these incidents are still investigating whether the vandalism was a hate crime. “I don’t want to label it a hate crime,” said the president of the Britton Road Association, the nonprofit corporation that manages the New York cemetery, the Waad Hakolel Cemetery. “I don’t think there’s any proof of that.”

In October 2016, swastikas and the words “Heil Hitler” were written in black paint at the entrance to Temple Beth Shalom’ s cemetery in Warwick, New York. Two months earlier, 40 headstones at the Waad Hakolel Cemetery were damaged but the local police department determined that this was an act of vandalism, not an anti-Semitic attack.
