Yesterday (Thursday), Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met with two senior-level Hamas leaders, Khaled Mashal and Ismail Haniyeh, in Qatar.

According to the Palestinian media outlets, Abbas stressed during the meeting that the sides need to “reach a national reconciliation” and deal with the dispute that is delaying the local elections and preventing the establishment of a unity government.

In addition, the Palestinian media outlets reported that the two sides agreed that “reconciliation is the main pathway to protecting Palestine.”

“There is no Palestinian state in Gaza and there cannot be a Palestinian state without Gaza,” stated Abbas’ office after the meeting.

The three met after Abbas had a business lunch with Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani in Doha. Abbas praised Qatar’s efforts to mediate between Hamas and Fatah.
