Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas was discharged from Istishari Hospital on Monday following a week-long stay. Abbas was admitted to the hospital last week due to a fever. Doctors at the medical center in Ramallah diagnosed him with pneumonia after running a few tests.

“Thanks to God, I’m leaving this place in better health and will return to work tomorrow,” Abbas told reporters today. He also thanked the Arab leaders who called him to see how he was doing while in the hospital.

Yesterday, reports surfaced about the hospital’s plans to discharge Abbas at 1:00 PM. It was even reported that the 83-year-old was going to hold a press conference before leaving the medical center. However, a few hours later, his doctors reversed their decision and said that he will remain in the hospital until further notice, without offering an explanation.

During his recovery, Abbas received Chinese Middle East Special Envoy Gong Xiaosheng. Aside from Gong, other officials were seen visiting Abbas in the hospital, including MK Ahmad Tibi of Israel’s Joint Arab List party.

Tibi, who maintains a close relationship with the Palestinian leader, visited Abbas at the hospital at least twice. As he left the hospital on Saturday, Tibi said that Abbas’s medical condition is improving. “I estimate that he will remain in the hospital for a few more days,” Tibi told Hadashot news. “His condition improved today. He’s suffering from a lung infection and receiving antibiotics.”

Last week, Palestinian media tried to refute rumors regarding Abbas’s health condition by publishing photos of him walking in the hallways of the hospital and reporting that he had spoken with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi over the phone. Jibril Rajoub, the secretary general of the Fatah Central Committee, visited Abbas at the hospital and said that “the pneumonia was discovered in a series of medical exams Abu Mazen [Abbas] recently underwent and they show he’s recovering, but the doctors have said that he should remain for further supervision.”

Abbas underwent several medical procedures in recent years, raising concerns about his health condition. In 2016, he underwent a cardiac catheterization. However, his doctors have repeatedly stressed that his state of health is good.
