Doctors have determined that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is apparently suffering from pneumonia and will need to remain in the hospital for a few more days while he recovers. Abbas was admitted to Ramallah’s Istishari Hospital on Sunday, days after he underwent an ear operation.

The Palestinian media has published photos of Abbas in the hospital, showing him walking in the hallways, an attempt to refute rumors regarding his health condition. Jibril Rajoub, the secretary general of the Fatah Central Committee, visited Abbas at the hospital and said that “the pneumonia was discovered in a series of medical exams Abu Mazen recently underwent and they show he’s recovering, but the doctors have said that he should remain for further supervision.”

Rajoub added, “The president is being briefed on every subject and continues his work from the hospital. I have updated him on the most important matters and there is no danger to his life. He is busy with the reconciliation agreement and hopes to finish his political career only when a Palestinian state has been established.”

Abbas was also visited by Arab-Israeli MK Ahmad Tibi, who said that he discussed many political matters with the Palestinian leader. He also said that Abbas will likely remain in the hospital for a couple days but that his condition has significantly improved.
