Israeli journalist Ari Shavit announced his resignation today (Sunday) after two women accused him of sexual assault and harassment. On Friday, JOL reported that Jewish Journal journalist Danielle Berrin accused Shavit of sexually assaulting her about two years ago. In addition, a second woman, a J Street staff member, also came forward to accuse him of sexual harassment, according to the American Jewish newspaper Forward. Shavit resigned from both Haaretz and Channel 10.
“I am ashamed of the mistakes I made with regards to people in general and women in particular,” said Shavit in a statement he released today. “I am embarrassed that I did not behave correctly to my wife and children. I am embarrassed about the consequences of what I did. In the last few days, I have come to understand that I have been afflicted by blindness. For years I did not understand what people meant when they spoke of privileged men who do not see the damage that they cause to others. Now, I am beginning to understand.”
