Sarit Oanounou, the mother of a Golani Brigade soldier who was killed in the Battle of Shuja’iyya during Operation Protective Edge, gave birth this morning to a baby girl at Rehovot’s Kaplan Medical Center.
Ben Oanounou was killed in the Battle of Shuja’iyya during Operation Protective Edge. The mother of the Golani Brigade soldier, Sarit, gave birth to a baby girl this morning (Tuesday), on the eve of Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day).
At 7:33 AM, Sarit gave birth to the baby girl at Rehovot’s Kaplan Medical Center. Verda Pomerantz, the mother of Daniel Pomerantz, who fell in the same battle with Ben, was also present during the birth.

“This is an exciting day for us, our family and supportive friends,” said Sarit. “I gave birth to my four children here and now I have given birth again, to my fifth child.” Sarit’s daughter, Ron, is currently serving in the Golani Brigade.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Sarit when she was in that last month of her pregnancy. “The loss cuts the life into ‘before’ and ‘after’ and I’m certain that there is not an hour a day in which you don’t think about Ben,” Netanyahu said during the meeting. Sarit replied: “All the time, you want to remember and feel things, to close your eyes and imagine.”
