A Bolivian priest decided to honor the day of Saint Roch in a festival for the dogs of the area
A Bolivian priest decided to honor the day of Saint Roch in a crowded festival for the dogs of the area, personally blessing each one. “I wanted him to bless my dog so she doesn’t get sick”, one of the event participants recounts.
A dog holiday: many people flowed over the past weekend to El Alto in Bolivia in order to receive a blessing from the priest. However the blessing was not intended for them – father Obbermaier had asked the catholic believers to bring along their dogs so that he could bless them. |God loves all of us – the dogs, the small children and the adults”, the priest said.
Obbermaier chose to honor in his own unique way the day of Saint Roch, who is considered to be the saint who watches over the dogs. “God, we thank you for creating dogs which accompany so many families. Thank you”, the priest blessed on the stage while holding a local dog.
Some of the residents asked the priest for a personal blessing for their pets, and a long line was formed. “I wanted him to bless my dog so she doesn’t get sick, because she tends to”, Antonia Luca, who arrived at the ceremony, recounted. “My dog Azumi is like my daughter – in fact she is a sister for my daughters”.
Rodolfo Vargas, a dog owner from the region, claimed that “this is the only place in the country which celebrates this day in this way, blessing the pet which is part of the family”.
